As more phone and PDA manufacturers integrate similar functions in their
products, the separation between phones and PDA’s is disappearing. The
resulting Smart Mobile Devices (SMDs) are becoming standard products for
mass markets. In parallel developments, companies with little or no history
in the phone market are developing the first generation of practical “Dick
Tracy” watches that bring a new dimension to this technology convergence.
Today’s 3G WCDMA phones boast downloading speeds of 384 kbps, and many
advanced, complex features are gradually becoming standard for these
phones. Mr. Mafie will discuss these developments and the technology behind

Farhad Mafie is a former Chapman University student with over 20 years of
experience in electronic and computer businesses and more than 10 years of
university-level teaching experience. He is the founder of Savant Company,
Inc. which organizes seminars and conferences, conducts market research, and
develops intelligence reports on emerging technologies. Mr. Mafie is the
former Vice President of Business Development and Technical Sales
Engineering at Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. He has a Master
of Science and a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. His
combined business and academic experience has given Mr. Mafie a unique
ability to effectively communicate complex new technologies to business
professionals at all levels, as well as the ability to foresee emerging
leading-edge technologies.
